Can CBD Make You High? Explaining the Misconception

There are many misunderstandings about what CBD oil, or cannabidiol, is, what it is used for, and how it affects you. When people hear that it is associated with cannabis, they may assume it can make you high. But can CBD make you high? To understand the answer, we need to first explore where it comes from and why there are certain assumptions about it.
Where Does CBD Come From?
CBD is also known as cannabidiol, which is a type of cannabinoid. A cannabinoid is a compound naturally found in hemp and cannabis. There are many different kinds of cannabinoids, and CBD in particular has gained a lot of attention in recent years, as many CBD-infused products have hit the market and become legal in several states.
CBD vs. THC
CBD can be derived from both the cannabis plant and from hemp. THC is another cannabinoid found in cannabis, as well as in hemp in very low levels. THC activates certain receptors in the brain called cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptors. These receptors are what cause the feeling of being high that people think of when they think of marijuana. CBD actually blocks these receptors, meaning you can’t get high on it. In fact, the effects of CBD on CB1 receptors may actually prevent you from getting high from THC if you take both at the same time.
Derived from Hemp
CBD that is derived from hemp has extremely low levels of THC in it; therefore, hemp-derived CBD products have become legal in the United States. As long as a product has no more than 0.3% of THC, it can be legally sold and consumed according to federal law. In some states, it is also legal to have products with more than 0.3% of THC.
A Misconception
Because both CBD and THC come from the cannabis plant, it is easy for people to mix them up or assume CBD has the same euphoric effects as THC. CBD also helps people relax, which can also be confused for a possible “high.” Additionally, some CBD products may give you a high if they have enough THC in them. That said, it is important to be aware of any other substances, such as THC, that are in a product you are interested in. If you are concerned about getting high, make sure the product has no or low levels of THC.
